Clothing is an important element of a good photograph

I mainly shoot in a lifestyle style, which means you don’t need to look for special outfits. In a few years it might feel strange to open a photo album and see pictures of yourselves wearing clothes you never wear in everyday life.

My goal is to show your uniqueness, not to hide it behind complicated or artificial images.

Three tips for choosing clothes for a photoshoot

When choosing clothes for a photoshoot, it is important to consider three main elements: harmony with the location, the colors of the outfits, and comfort.

1. The most important thing is consistency

It is important that your clothes match both the location of the photoshoot and the overall idea of the session.

There is no need to choose outfits that feel out of place or try to wear all your “best” pieces at once.

For example, classic clothing and high heels may look very unusual during a family photoshoot by the sea or in a park.

If you are still choosing a place for your photoshoot, you can also explore some photoshoot locations that I often use.

2. Colors and textures of clothing

For a photoshoot, it is best to choose plain clothes in calm, soft colors rather than bright ones.
Ideally, these colors should also be present in the location where the session takes place.

For example, shades of blue (the sea and the sky) and beige (sand) work beautifully for a beach photoshoot.

For sessions in nature, neutral tones such as beige, brown, green, black, white, and gray usually work very well.

It is also better to choose natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool, or cashmere.

Clothes with large prints, visible logos, or very bright details can distract attention in the frame, so it is best to avoid them.

3. Comfort when choosing clothes

Favor a look that resonates with you.

I always recommend choosing clothes that are as comfortable as possible for you.

That it would not have to constantly correct it and worry about how it sits on you.

This will greatly distract from the process of shooting and will create unnecessary tension.

Also when choosing clothes pay attention to underwear, so that it is not translucent and was not visible from under the clothes (straps, lace, etc.).

If you look at a photograph, close it, and remember the person and the emotion — but not what they were wearing — it means the clothes were chosen well.

Because my photographs are not about clothes. They are about you, your feelings, and your emotions.

Accessories and jewelry

Accessories and jewelry should match the overall idea of the photoshoot, suit the location, and complement the style of the chosen outfits.

In general, if the jewelry does not play a meaningful role in the concept of the session, I recommend leaving it at home.

For a photoshoot, it is best to wear only jewelry that has a personal meaning for you — such as a wedding ring, a cross, or other small symbolic pieces.

What kind of clothes work best

Pantsuits, loose monochrome T-shirts, basic tops and tank tops, loose trousers or jeans, turtlenecks, oversized sweaters and sweatshirts, loose shirts, and casual dresses.

For example: an oversized shirt with trousers, a comfortable top with jeans, a long shirt, or a simple dress paired with a jacket.

For children, simple and comfortable clothes work best: a bodysuit, a plain T-shirt with trousers, or a long white or black T-shirt.

What clothes are better to avoid

It is better to avoid clothes with large prints or lettering, outfits with rhinestones, ruffles, or sequins, tight jeans and leggings, and any clothing that restricts movement.

Very short skirts may also feel uncomfortable during a photoshoot.

It is usually best to avoid the so-called family look, when all family members are dressed exactly the same — for example, white T-shirts and jeans.

One last tip

Clothing should never become a concern during a photoshoot.
The most important thing is to choose outfits in which you feel natural and comfortable.

When your clothes truly reflect who you are, the photographs also become more authentic.
